Pelagic Birdwatching
A pelagic bird spends a significant portion of its life on the open ocean, rarely venturing close to land except to breed. Some pelagic birds are powerful fliers, while others can remain aloft for hours while gliding or soaring. Experience pelagic birdwatching with Drake Bay Birdwatching.
In the avian world, pelagic birds are quite unique. They have some outstanding characteristics that are found among no other types of birds in the world.
Once the group is on board we will navigate for 2 hours straight to the pelagic zone by using the GPS system and following currents. We will look out for big groups of birds and dolphins feeding together. On the way there we will also have the opportunity to spot plenty of marine life such as sea turtles, dolphin species like Bootle-nosed, Spotted or Common Dolphins, and False Orcas. How about the sighting of sea snakes and during whale season the Humpback Whales! The bird life offshore here includes species such as:
- Nazca Booby
- Masked Booby
- Red-footed Booby
- Red-billed Tropicbird
We may cruise around Caño Island as well and look for some other frequently seen species. These could be;
- Galapagos Shearwater
- Wedge-rumped-Wilson’s Storm-Petrel
- Brown Noody.
The planning and logistics of this tour require plenty of anticipation due to the ocean conditions, tides, swells, meteorological predictions and time of the year. We recommend you to reserve with at least couple of months in advance.
The tour includes transportation, expert birding guide, on board lunch, water and juice.
