Osa Peninsula

About

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Situated at Costa Rica’s southern pacific coast, the Osa Peninsula continues to be the country’s most remote destination. Although not easily to access, the peninsula is home to at least half of all species living in Costa Rica which makes the trek very worth it. Find yourself amongst the vast intact rainforest that houses some of Costa Rica’s remaining populations of jaguars, tapirs, scarlet macaws and more. The peninsula remains the perfect place to get a glimpse into Costa Rica’s past with enormous pre-Columbian stone spheres that continue to bewilder archaeologists, as well as rural gold-mining villages and cattle ranches. Although access to the main towns have improved to parts of Osa, other parts such as Drake Bay remain off-the-grid. Be prepared to deal with rough roads (especially in the rainy season), hiking trails and river crossings are many. The locals of Drake Bay were excited to welcome the new modern airport built in 2017 with three airlines operating daily flights directly to Drake Bay from San Jose. The rewards for getting Drake won’t fail! Don’t miss out on the unique destination of Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

About

Drake Bay

Drake Bay is a small bay on the north side of the Osa Peninsula, and a thrill-seekers heaven. This bay is believed to be a port used by Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century and the location of one of the British pirate’s fabled hidden treasures. The main town of Bahía Drake is Agujitas. It is estimated to have a population of about 1,000 residents. The bay is off the beaten track and can be reached by plane, boat, and car (ideally a 4×4 vehicle) during the dry season. There are kilometers of unpaved road and multiple river crossings required to reach Drake Bay. But once you arrive, the rewards are endless. Find rare and endemic species within the main areas of the village. It truly is still a wild place, considering it’s close distance to the outskirts of Corcovado. Besides the obvious tours like hiking Corcovado National Park and birdwatching, we can arrange for you to enjoy other activities such as scuba diving, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, horseback riding, sport fishing, or exploring the miles of deserted picturesque coastline.

About

Corcovado National Park

Considerably Costa Rica’s star attractions in terms of nature and birdwatching, Parque Nacional Corcovado takes up nearly half of the Osa Peninsula, and is home to an incredibly diverse range of wildlife. It is one of the last great original stretches of tropical rainforest in Pacific Central America. Corcovado National Park is home to a plethora of tropical and neo-tropical ecosystems. Considered one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, its wildlife includes the stunning scarlet macaws, jaguars, all four species of monkeys, the elusive tapirs, hanging sloths and dart frogs. Hike along the Pacific coast and head inland to trails through habitats ranging from Pacific beaches and mangrove swamps to lowland and mountainous rainforests. It’s no wonder Corcovado National Park is the star attraction of the Osa Peninsula and hands down the best place to view rare wildlife in Costa Rica.
